The 2013-14 Italian harvest produced 480,000 metric tons of olive oil, down 8% from last year. The average annual Italian olive oil production, its Imports, Exports and Consumption are listed below:
Production: +500,000 metric tons (2nd in the world after Spain’s 1,500,000 tons)
Imports: +600,000 metric tons
Exports: -400,000 metric tons
Consumption: -700,000 metric tons(12 liters per capita annually)
Look at the math above and draw your own conclusions: Either Italians consume only 100,000 tons of their own oil and 600,000 tons of imported olive oil and export the remaining 400,000 tons, or the majority of the Italian-labeled olive oil exported to the USA is not Italian!!!
