A wet summer in combination with a fruit fly blight, has led to a widespread failure of the annual harvest in large parts of Italy, with some producers not harvesting at all this year according to the Confederation of Agricultural producers in Italy (CIA). Production fell by up to 80% in some areas of Italy, raising the price of the upcoming harvest by 20%. The quality will also be adversely affected as the flavour of the oil will be too acidic, with a marked woody flavour, which cannot be sold as extra virgin. Italy will have to import a lot of olive oil this year. What will they export?
