Last year’s harvest of table and oil olives in Greece were at a fifty year high. Normally, the year after a high yield harvest, the trees produce a reduced amount of fruit, giving them a chance to regain their strength. But the 2013 crop suffered further from unusually warm and windy conditions last Spring, thus not allowing the flowers to settle and turn into fruit, leaving many areas of Greece, particularly in the north and Crete, with little or no crop.
Thus, although Greece’s total olive oil output for 2013-14 is expected to fall to 150-160,000 tons, with some incidents of higher acidity counts than normal, Olive Oil Selections will again provide superior extra virgin oils in adequate quantities.
